Suspicion of Suicide

"Did you hear?" someone asked. "It's horrible!" the other hushed quickly. "Do you think?" the same person asked again. "I don't have an answer, so you don't have to ask," the other preempted.

What do we say when a believer takes his own life? Often, we knew it was an ordeal that desperately needs an end, but we certainly had little idea of how difficult and painful it was. But, why did our friend lose hope in God and simply give up? And, why did we not notice and help? Now, we are left in shock, sad and even guilty.

In its aftermath, our knowledge of the person, our relationship with the victim and even our theology are challenged. In the same way, the circumstance of Jesus's death deserves to be revisited and rethought.

The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One." The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." Luke 23:35-37 (NIV)

His last word on the cross, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit," confirmed the fact that Jesus gave up His life voluntarily. It was not the nails, not the torture, not?

So, did Jesus? Do I really know why and what He accomplished?

有人問：“你聽說了麼？太可怕了！”另一人很快就阻止他繼續往下說。同一人又發問了：“你認為....”另一人搶先說道：“我沒有答案，你也不必問了。”

當一名信徒奪取自己的生命時，我們該如何回應？很多時，我們都深知這嚴酷的考驗迫切地需要一個了結，但我們肯定並不清楚這到底有多困難，甚至痛苦。然而，為什麼我們的朋友對神完全絕望，並且就這麼放棄了？還有，為什麼我們之前沒有注意到，並且伸出援手？ 而現在，我們只能在驚嚇、悲痛，甚至罪疚中度過。

在不幸事件的餘波當中，我們對這個人的了解、我們和當事人之間的關係，甚至是我們自己的神學觀念都要受到挑戰。同樣地，耶穌之死所帶來的影響，也是我們必須回顧和反思的。

那些人站在旁邊觀看，而那些官府們甚至嘲笑他，他們說：“他救了別人。他若是基督，神所揀選的，可以救自己吧。” 兵丁也戲弄他，上前拿醋送給他喝，說，“你若是猶太人的王，可以救自己吧。” 路加福音23:35-37

耶穌在十字架上的最後遺言：“父啊，我將我的靈魂交在你手裡。” 從這句話我們可以看出耶穌確實是自願捨棄了自己的生命。奪取他性命的不僅是釘子，也不僅是酷刑折磨。不是嗎？

那麼，耶穌究竟做了什麼呢？我真的清楚耶穌所成就的一切嗎？我清楚他這麼做的原因嗎？
