Suspicion of Suicide

"Did you hear?" someone asked. "It's horrible!" the other hushed quickly. "Do you think?" the same person asked again. "I don't have an answer, so you don't have to ask," the other preempted.

What do we say when a believer takes his own life? Often, we knew it was an ordeal that desperately needs an end, but we certainly had little idea of how difficult and painful it was. But, why did our friend lose hope in God and simply give up? And, why did we not notice and help? Now, we are left in shock, sad and even guilty.

In its aftermath, our knowledge of the person, our relationship with the victim and even our theology are challenged. In the same way, the circumstance of Jesus's death deserves to be revisited and rethought.

The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One." The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." Luke 23:35-37 (NIV)

His last word on the cross, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit," confirmed the fact that Jesus gave up His life voluntarily. It was not the nails, not the torture, not?

So, did Jesus? Do I really know why and what He accomplished?

当一名信徒夺取自己的生命时，我们该如何回应？很多时，我们都深知这严酷的考验迫切地需要一个了结，但我们肯定并不清楚这到底有多困难，甚至痛苦。然而，为什么我们的朋友对神完全绝望，并且就这么放弃了？还有，为什么我们之前没有注意到，并且伸出援手？ 而现在，我们只能在惊吓、悲痛，甚至罪疚中度过。

在不幸事件的余波当中，我们对这个人的了解、我们和当事人之间的关系，甚至是我们自己的神学观念都要受到挑战。同样地，耶稣之死所带来的影响，也是我们必须回顾和反思的。

那些人站在旁边观看，而那些官府们甚至嘲笑他，他们说：“他救了别人。他若是基督，神所拣选的，可以救自己吧。” 兵丁也戏弄他，上前拿醋送给他喝，说，“你若是犹太人的王，可以救自己吧。” 路加福音23:35-37

耶稣在十字架上的最后遗言：“父啊，我将我的灵魂交在你手里。” 从这句话我们可以看出耶稣确实是自愿舍弃了自己的生命。夺取他性命的不仅是钉子，也不仅是酷刑折磨。不是吗？

那么，耶稣究竟做了什么呢？我真的清楚耶稣所成就的一切吗？我清楚他这么做的原因吗？
