We learned the U.S. economy SHRANK 1% during the first quarter of 2014, as we can see in the chart above. That was a negative surprise from the +0.1% growth rate that was initially reported. This was the first time the U.S. economy contracted in three years (Q1 2011) and only the second such occurrence since the Great Recession ended in 2009.
