前些時候出差，因為天氣原因飛機延誤，沒有其他地方可去，就在機場的Border’s 里挑了幾本書。其中一本就是“檸檬樹” The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East。作者Sandy Tolan 一開始是在1998年為NPR作節目，後來花了7年的時間採訪查資料寫成了這本書。

一名19歲的猶太姑娘Dalia獨自在家，這一天來了幾位陌生的阿拉伯訪客，其中一位26歲的男子Bashir，是在20年前和家人從這裡被驅逐離開的。Dalia 是在1歲的時候，由父母從保加利亞帶來到以色列。這所房子在她的印象里就是她唯一的家，現在她意識到也是面前這個巴勒斯坦人的家。後院裡的那棵檸檬樹是Bashir的父親種植的。

故事追述到1927年前後英國統治下的巴勒斯坦阿拉伯人和猶太人的矛盾，到1948年以色列建國，猶太人從歐洲逃生湧入巴勒斯坦。而大批巴勒斯坦人成為難民。再到1967年的6日戰爭猶太人進一步占領加薩地帶和West Bank.（Bashir 被驅逐後第一次回到故園就是在6日戰爭剛結束不久）。以及後來阿拉法特領導的巴解運動，哈馬斯組織，巴勒斯坦人內部，以色列人內部各自的分歧都有清晰的分析。 直到2005年沙龍在西岸樹牆。

Bashir 一直堅持1948年UN的決議，那就是巴勒斯坦人有權回到自己的故鄉。認為巴以爭端唯一的解決辦法是建立一個共同的國家。他坐了十幾二十年的牢，做為囚犯代表見過拉賓。後來又是四名被流放到黎巴嫩的“政治犯”之一，引起國際上對以色列的極大抗議。

作者在前言裡說這本書裡所有的都是事實，沒有發生過的事情他絕不會說發生過。更讓我吃驚的是，作者Tolan是猶太人。當然，只看一本書也許有偏見，要理解的更全面，需要看到1948年以前以及了解猶太人的Zion是怎麼回事。但且不說巴勒斯坦人以色列人誰對誰錯，我十分敬佩巴勒斯坦人的勇氣。

不得不說，命運是件奇怪的東西。我想起電影Indochine 和 Motorcycle Dairies. Indochine里女兒逃離包辦婚姻，千里追尋夢中情人，絕對小資。爬山涉水，對自己的國家重新認識，最後變成了個革命者。Motorcycle Dairies 里的“Che” 年輕時候的原本innocent的週遊也讓他聽到 his life's calling。 對於猶太人，巴勒斯坦人來說，現在的紛爭到底是命運的安排，還是自己的選擇呢？
