彩紙和汽球飛下來,同時champion歌大聲響起 "We are the champions my friend. And we'll keep on fighting till the end." Eating Contest Everyone that knows me knows that I take pride in the amount I can eat. I can out-eat most girls I know (except for Elaine, who, despite her delicate small frame, can pack in food like no others). So of course, any eating challenge presented to me is always taken up. Last weekend I was sitting at a popular college hangout shooting the breeze with my friends, when Eugene, a geeky friend of mine, started boasting that he could out drink and out eat Elaine and me combined. Out drink?? Fine. We both have the alcohol tolerance of 8-year old girls. You down 6 drinks, and you'll have us under the table easy. There's nothing we can do about that. We're genetically inferior. BUT OUT EAT??? BOTH OF US COMBINED???? Blasphemy!! We argued incessantly that he was talking crazy, but nothing would get through to that thick head of his. Ultimately, it came down to an eat-off. The next day. Lunch. City Buffet, a local Chinese restaurant. Loser pays. Sunday morning rolled around. Elaine and I prepped for the contest. She ate a small bowl of oatmeal for breakfast. I ate 5 potato chips as a teaser. By the time it was 2:30pm, we were both starved and ready to take on Eugene. Now, Elaine and I are no fools. We ????uted with strategy. The grand master plan: when Elaine ate a lot, I’d take it easy. When I went at it, Elaine would take a break. Basically, by alternating eating loads, we would force Eugene to maintain a consistent high. The contest started. For the first hour, we didn't know if we could break him. He showed no signs of pain. Everyone kept a perfect poker face. Every once in a while, someone would bluff, "Wow…I'm still hungry." By the second hour straight of solid consumption, we were all ridiculously stuffed, but with too much pride to admit it. The first sign of weakness was when Elaine went for another round, and Eugene yelled "no more noodles!" At that point, we knew we had him. We had found his weak spot, his Achilles’ heel! I deliberately went for another round of meat AND NOODLES to scare him. But Eugene matched me. Elaine grabbed more veggies AND NOODLES. Eugene also matched her. Then Eugene himself went for another round of meat. Oh my gosh! Elaine and I looked at each other in shock. We almost declared forfeit. Luckily, we call his bluff. He was getting the meat to intimidate us, and his meat remained untouched. All is not lost yet. The lunch portion of the competition ended in an even tie. Tiebreaker - Dessert round!!! Elaine and I each made double desserts. One for us, and a matching one for Eugene. Elaine finished her dessert. And I also finished mine. Eugene started on his first one. After he finished it, he started to lean over in pain. He stirred the fruit around in disgust… And he put down his spoon in defeat!!!!!!!! We won! The imaginative champion song blared through the loud speakers: “we are the champions my friend. And we’ll keep on fighting till the end”, with confetti and balloons falling from the sky. A free lunch (and a lot of indigestion). In retrospect, I got 10 rounds of food. OMG. But yet I'd do it all over again....all for the pride. |
