Citing Lévi-Strauss, Rowe and Koetter envisaged a middle position for the artist/architect, somewhere between the “odd job man” and the scientist, for these two are not only distinct but reciprocal: “the scientist and the bricoleur are to be distinguished ‘by the inverse functions which they assign to event and structures as means and ends, the scientist creating events . . . by means of structures and the bricoleur creating structures by means of events.’”
