前些时候出差，因为天气原因飞机延误，没有其他地方可去，就在机场的Border’s 里挑了几本书。其中一本就是“柠檬树” The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East。作者Sandy Tolan 一开始是在1998年为NPR作节目，后来花了7年的时间采访查资料写成了这本书。

一名19岁的犹太姑娘Dalia独自在家，这一天来了几位陌生的阿拉伯访客，其中一位26岁的男子Bashir，是在20年前和家人从这里被驱逐离开的。Dalia 是在1岁的时候，由父母从保加利亚带来到以色列。这所房子在她的印象里就是她唯一的家，现在她意识到也是面前这个巴勒斯坦人的家。后院里的那棵柠檬树是Bashir的父亲种植的。

故事追述到1927年前后英国统治下的巴勒斯坦阿拉伯人和犹太人的矛盾，到1948年以色列建国，犹太人从欧洲逃生涌入巴勒斯坦。而大批巴勒斯坦人成为难民。再到1967年的6日战争犹太人进一步占领加萨地带和West Bank.（Bashir 被驱逐后第一次回到故园就是在6日战争刚结束不久）。以及后来阿拉法特领导的巴解运动，哈马斯组织，巴勒斯坦人内部，以色列人内部各自的分歧都有清晰的分析。 直到2005年沙龙在西岸树墙。

Bashir 一直坚持1948年UN的决议，那就是巴勒斯坦人有权回到自己的故乡。认为巴以争端唯一的解决办法是建立一个共同的国家。他坐了十几二十年的牢，做为囚犯代表见过拉宾。后来又是四名被流放到黎巴嫩的“政治犯”之一，引起国际上对以色列的极大抗议。

作者在前言里说这本书里所有的都是事实，没有发生过的事情他绝不会说发生过。更让我吃惊的是，作者Tolan是犹太人。当然，只看一本书也许有偏见，要理解的更全面，需要看到1948年以前以及了解犹太人的Zion是怎么回事。但且不说巴勒斯坦人以色列人谁对谁错，我十分敬佩巴勒斯坦人的勇气。

不得不说，命运是件奇怪的东西。我想起电影Indochine 和 Motorcycle Dairies. Indochine里女儿逃离包办婚姻，千里追寻梦中情人，绝对小资。爬山涉水，对自己的国家重新认识，最后变成了个革命者。Motorcycle Dairies 里的“Che” 年轻时候的原本innocent的周游也让他听到 his life's calling。 对于犹太人，巴勒斯坦人来说，现在的纷争到底是命运的安排，还是自己的选择呢？
