That, it turned out, was far from the case. Hemingway, living in Cuba, was at work on an encompassing novel about the sea. Nagel says when he sent it Scribner's, they sent it back claiming it was unpublishable. But they did like the last part, a story about an old Cuban man and his battle with a monster marlin. “Mary was Hemingway's typist while he was working on Isand in the Stream. She was not impressed with most of the writing. But then she came to the epilogue, the new story about the man and fish. She read it in one setting and it gave her goosebumps. It was the story that fulfilled his promise as a writer, she told him. Hemingway then sent the draft of the story to Carlos Baker. Baker's reaction was as enthusiastic as Mary's. The new story, title The Old Man and the Sea, was astounding. Hemingway now sensed that he had created another masterpiece and decided to publish the story as a novella, entirely separte from the labored Island in the Stream. It may have been the wisest decision of his entire career - Island was not published until 1970, eleven years after Hemingway's death” ---The Hunt and the Feast: A life of Ernest Hemingway by John Tessitore “A few week's later they received the news that Charles Scribner had died. For several days Ernest felt abandoned. It seemed there was no one life in the publishing business whom he could trust. A New York publisher restored his faith by saying that The Old Man and Sea should be published in full in a single issue of Life magazine. The suggestion prompted Ernest to write Wallace Meyer, now his editor at Scriber's, proposing that the story be published as a short noval. Meyer endorsed the idea and reported a few weeks later that the Book of the Month club wanted to buy the rights. The news was followd by a cable from Life. The magzine would pay 4000 dollars to print the book in a special September 1952 issue, thus putting The Old Man and the Sea into the hands of five million readers. No other American noval had been offered such wide exposure” -- The life and the legend: Ernest Hemingway by Richard B Lyttle 看了这个,你应该明白《老人与海》和Isand in the Stream的关系以及出版经过了吧?
