my feeling is that the word 'party' is a bit abused since it came to china like you mentioned. but it is everybody's vocabulary now and it is hard to change. maybe that is just the nature of our culture - remember someone says: everything foreign is different when it comes to china, however I did not have more studies on this particular word.
