Some of your statements are wrong. I agree with you on some of your statements, such as; lots of Chinese students have perfect SAT scores, perfect AP scores, and piano lessons, don’t have passion in politics, etc.....
What your friends said are excuses..... The main reason is discrimination.....
For example, UC-Berkeley only accepts very few students from hundreds of thousand of applicants. They use computer to select applicants into 3 piles; the first pile are accepted, the second pile are rejected, and the 3rd pile are potential. They only read/review the potential applicants.
They put all students in different buckets; White, Asian, Chinese, Black, Latino and they decide to take how many students from each bucket....
I know this process very well, because I have 3 sons, all of them graduated from Mission San Jose High school in Fremont, California.
They all went to UC-Berkeley for undergraduate degree, after that they went to different schools for graduate degrees - Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Yale, University of Pennsylvania (Wharton school of business).
When I attend my son’s commencements, I saw the Asian students almost 25% to 35% or even higher among the student body, much higher than the general public. If you ask students in Berkeley, most of them will say the Black and Latino are not getting good grades.
If they don’t have racial ‘quota’, I think the Chinese students could become significant majority of the student body. I know lots of our neighbor’s sons and daughters.
