Sorry for the typos in my previous posting, but I trust most readers could guess precisely what I meant to say.

Also, I just went through the list of the 2006 APS Fellows and found only two scientists based in China were honored, Wang EG and Yang Xueming of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics. Each year, only up to 0.5% of active APS members could be elected to the APS Fellowship.

Wang and Yang's citations read:

"Wang, Enge
Chinese Academy of Sciences
Citation: For his contributions to the synthesis of tubular graphite cones, nanobells and other nanostructures and for developing the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as a premier institution to promote international collaborations.
Nominated By: International Physics (FIP)"

"Yang, Xueming
Chinese Academy of Sciences
Citation: For his contributions to the study of reaction dynamics of elementary chemical reactions using the state-of-the-art crossed molecular beam methods.
Nominated By: Chemical Physics (DCP)"

It is ironic that, in the case of Wang, what was highly commented on by the APS (second part in the citation, for promoting IOP's international collaborations with the rest of the world) has become the major target of attacks on him here.

Also, a quick search shows that Yang got his PhD training at UC Berkeley with Nobel prize winner Y. Lee in chemical physics. After many years of outstanding research in the States and Taiwan, he returned to Dalian recently. Not too surprisingly, Yang is also among the candidates for this year's members of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
