為啥全世界“媽媽”的發音都差不多?

前段時間我讀到一篇《經濟學人》的文章，解答了我心中的一個長期困惑：為啥全世界“媽媽”的發音都差不多？
文章的副標題是 Across the world, the term for “mother” usually contains an m-sound（全世界，“母親”這個詞往往含有“m”的發音）。
一開頭，文章給我們展示一張地圖，標記了世界上所有“媽媽”這個詞帶有 m 音的語言，結果大部分地區都被標成了紅色。
文章這樣評價：
It puts old maps of defunct empires to shame; scores of countries are shaded red.（數十個國家都被標成紅色，這讓（疆域遼闊的）古代帝國汗顏。）
接下來文章開始分析為啥很多語言中“媽媽”一詞都帶有 m 音。
作者認為所有語言都有一個共同的特徵：
some sounds are more widespread than others around the world（有些發音在世界上更加普遍）
比如b, m, p, t, d and k，因為這些輔音容易發音。
下面這段非常關鍵：
A baby vocalising will, at first, make a vowel-like sound, usually something like “ah”, which requires little in the way of control over the mouth. If they briefly close their mouth and continue vocalising, air will come out of their nose, thus making the m-sound that is used in “mother” around the world.
譯：嬰兒在發聲時，一開始會發出類似元音的發音，例如“啊”，這對控制嘴巴幾乎沒有什麼要求。如果他們很快地合上嘴巴、繼續發音，空氣就會從他們的鼻子裡出來，從而發出“m”的音，這就是全世界人說“母親”時會用到的聲音。
簡而言之，世界上很多語言“媽媽”帶有 m 音，是因為——“ma”是最輕松、最好發的音。另外，作者還提到了“爸爸”發音在全世界也比較相似的原因：
Babies can easily stop their breath when they close their lips. This produces a b- or a p-sound. It is surely for this reason that so many names for “father” use these consonants: papa in English, abb in Arabic and baba in Mandarin.
譯：嬰兒閉上嘴巴的時候，很容易暫停呼吸。這一動作就會產生出“b-”或“p-”的聲音。正是由於這個原因，許多表示“父親”的叫法都包含這些輔音：英語中的“papa”，阿拉伯語中的“abb”，普通話中的“baba”。
我們都知道英文中關於“爸爸”和“媽媽”的正式名稱是 father（父親） 和 mother（母親），這兩個單詞挺難念，中間還有咬舌音，父母不會教孩子從小發這兩個音，畢竟一個孩子至少到7歲以上，才能準確地發出這些音節。
所以教孩子從小說“mama”、“baba”是最輕松省事兒的方式，各個語言都一樣。
最後作者揭示了一個令我感到腦洞大開的真相：
說有一位俄羅斯的語言學家 Roman Jakobson（羅曼·雅各布森）指出：
Babies are cooing and babbling to practise the use of their vocal apparatus. It is the parents, desperate to communicate, who identify those early sounds as the baby’s “names” for them.
譯：嬰兒牙牙學語時，只是在練習使用他們的發聲器官。正是急於跟嬰兒溝通的父母，把這些“嬰語”當作對自己的稱呼。
所以，並非世界各地的嬰兒把父母稱為“baba”、“mama”，而是急於跟嬰兒溝通的父母們，把嬰兒練習發聲時最簡單的發音——“baba”、“mama”定成對自己的稱呼。
高能預警，文章最後一段升華了，很溫情、感人：
It is hard to find linguistic universals amid the world’s dazzling variety. It is heartwarming to find a commonality embedded in another universal: the love that babies inspire in their mamas and their papas.

譯：在紛繁複雜的世界中找到語言的共性，實屬不易。不過，語言存在另一種維度上的共性——那便是嬰兒喚起的父愛和母愛。
我想，正是這樣的愛，讓人類文明星火不滅、代代相傳。
想起諾蘭《星際穿越》裡的一句名著名台詞：Love is the one thing that transcends time and space.
