Zinfandel would be a traditional American red wine which was common grown in Napa in 60s. It's pretty strong but doesn't have as many flavors as to, say, Pinot Noir. White Zinfandel could be a good choice for transition from white wine to red and can be easily found in wine shops. Let us know how you like it =).
