Mr 润涛阎, I have been reading your posts with great interest and sometimes admiration. But this time I have to disagree with you on the interpretation of this Paulson-on-his-knee event.
First, "literally on one knee" 就是“文字上的单腿下跪” ? I am surprised at your knowledge of the English language, which does not seem to match the level of confidence with which you analyzed American media's response to the event. "Literally" is not 文字上. It's synonymous to "actually". Whoever used the word believed that Mr Paulson was really, actually, physically on his knee, not metaphorically. This following paragraph yours reflects your frustration at the ignorance of the Chinese media, which I share to some degree. But I cannot help noticing an air of condescension and self-righteousness. There is nothing wrong in feeling holier-than-thou, if you can support it with substance. You have a good point in criticizing the bias in Chinese media, but your argument in making the point is flawed. By the way, your analysis of the American media has some wishful thinking. And when it comes to partisan politics there is always some bias, I wonder which medium you are referring to by saying 美国媒体要充当和事老的角色 . From what I googled, Paulson was on his knee and he was begging, if only (half)-jokingly. Saying 美国人都知道single knee是求婚的温柔的央求 is just laughable. Keep up your good blogging. Match up with some thorough homework ;-) Best Ragards. See below for what I gathered from Google. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/seven-days-that-brought-paulson-to-his-knees-944760.html By the end of the week, he was on his knees, begging Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat Speaker of the House, to keep his proposal alive. The image of the brick-built Treasury Secretary literally on one knee in the White House Roosevelt Room succinctly captures Mr Paulson's humiliation. Another source: In the Roosevelt Room after the session, the Treasury secretary, Henry M. Paulson Jr., literally bent down on one knee as he pleaded with Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, not to “blow it up” by withdrawing her party’s support for the package over what Ms. Pelosi derided as a Republican betrayal. “I didn’t know you were Catholic,” Ms. Pelosi said, a wry reference to Mr. Paulson’s kneeling, according to someone who observed the exchange. She went on: “It’s not me blowing this up, it’s the Republicans.” Mr. Paulson sighed. “I know. I know.” Yet Another: He half-jokingly went down on bended knee and clasped his hands as if in prayer. “I didn’t know you were a Catholic,” Mrs Pelosi, a Catholic herself, quipped to the normally undemonstrative and austere Mr Paulson, a Christian Scientist. |
