圣经all we need

“Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father’s house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the Prophets, let them listen to them;” Luke 16:27-29

When it comes to delivering the souls of sinners from a well-deserved eternity of punishment in hell, Moses and the Prophets, the Holy S c r I p tures, are all we need. The rich man thought his brothers needed more-he thought they needed Lazarus to come back from the dead so that they could be saved from hell. But Jesus said it clearly, “They have Moses and the Prophets, let them listen to them”

Holy S c r I p ture is all we need. It is all we need because it contains the law of God, his holy will for our lives that serves as mirror to show us our sins. The law is the Holy Spirit’s hammer to crush our proud and self-rightous hearts; it terrifies us with God’s guilty verdict.

Holy S c r I p ture is all we need because it contains the gospel, the good news of what God has done through he live, death, and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ, to take away our sins. The gospel is the Holy Spirit’s soothing medicine that heals the broken heart.

But the gospel is more news. “It is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes,”(Romans1:16). Paul knew its power. He trusted its power. He describes his work in one church in this way:” When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom---I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified---so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power” (1 Corinthians 2:1)

“No, father Abraham,” he said, “but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.” He said to him, “if they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead”

The rich man did not take No for an answer. Convinced that he had a better idea, he repreated his request; this time hinting that Abraham simply didn’t understand the punch the reappearance of a dead man would pack. Abraham was not persuaded. His reply to the rich man expands on his first answer. Previously Abraham had said that the Holy S c r I p tures are all we need; now he says they are all we get.

How much of the rich man lives in all of us! From pastors to people, how often we think we have a better plan for the world of our lord than the Lord himself has. He gave us his Word- the Word we hear in Holy S c r I p ture and the Word we see in the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion. But the rich man in us says, “Word, water, wine and wheat, what are they when there is a world to save? Give us something with some pizzazz, and we’ll turn the world upside down”

But our arguments fail to persuade the Lord. His command remains unchanged: “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation” Mark16:15.

What need to change are our hearts and our lack of trust in the tools the Lord has given us to use in doing his work. He’s given us his promise: “My word---will no return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” Isaiah 55:11

If all you find there are Moses and the Prophets, be thankful, because nothing else will convince you that you are a lost sinner and nothing else will convince you that Jesus is your living savior.
