The vast majority of uses of “mystery” (mystērion) in the NT are associated with beginning eschatological fulfillment of OT prophecy, as we saw earlier in discussion of Matt. 13:10–11 and 2 Thess. 2:3–7 (see also Rom. 11:25; Eph. 3:3, 9). If “mystery” carries a prophetic sense in connection to Gen. 2:24, then the Genesis passage would be seen as a typological prophecy, much as I argued in the case of Hos. 11:1 in Matt. 2:15, whereby a historical pattern (in this case, repeated marriages) from OT history foreshadows or adumbrates some redemptive event in the NT age.
