昨天，HHMI公布了今年新支持的PI，總計56人上榜，第一期給予他們總計超過6億美金的支持，平均每人過千萬美金。在此前的各期HHMI中，大陸背景的華人總計才有10人，而今年一次就爆發式的占據了10個名額，這10人中有一個是在大學轉學到美國拿的學位，其他的本科都是在中國讀，其中北大有4人。值得慶賀的是，同濟不僅實現了0的突破，而且有2人上榜，其中Kang Shen是地地道道的同濟醫大校友，很高興。另外4個分別是南大，清華，北醫和復旦的。具體情況參見後面的附表。
這56個PI中，男性42人，占了75%。總共來自31個研究院校。其中the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, Boston University, Cornell University-Ithaca, Purdue University, Texas A&M University, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and the University of Texas at Austin 這7所學校第一次上榜。不過有一點值得注意的是，名校還是占了半壁江山，其中 UCB 5，MIT 5，Princeton 4， Stanford 4，CalTech 3，Harvard 3，UTSouthWestern 3, 7所學校總計27人，已經近半。
